What are the Different Options Available for Flat Roof Construction?

What are the Different Options Available for Flat Roof Construction?

Are you planning for the construction of a new house, or have you decided to replace the current roofing of your home? If yes, then we would advise you to consider opting for flat roof. This article will inform you about the available options or the most commonly used types of flat roofing in this part of the world.

The first option we will be discussing about is rolled roofing. It is popular primarily due to its low cost; however, that’s not the only benefit of this material. If you want a flat roof to be installed quickly, you will have few better options than rolled roofing. The majority of the installation workers working with this roofing material adopts the peel & stick method of installation. So, what does the material actually contain? Rolled roofing involves use of mineral rolls that come coated with asphalt paper. These rolls get fastened to the roof’s deck by means of roofing adhesive or nails. If your house has a low sloped or flat roof, the roofing professionals may need 2 layers of rolls for completing the roofing task. The only problem with this roofing solution is that it is not very long lasting; however, you should not bother about that as it will not require you to spend a big amount. We would suggest you to pick this option only if you are looking for a short-term solution for your home or are hiring the services for covering a shed or outbuilding.

The next flat roofing option you must know about is BUR or built-up roofing. This is the option for you if you are looking for a mid-level solution for your flat roof. In other words, if you have a moderate budget and if you want the roof to be moderately durable, BUR is the way to go. This roofing type contains multiple layers; the materials used for making those layers include: a combination of felt and fiberglass along with a variety of bituminous resin (for instance, tar or asphalt). The bituminous resin gets heated up to a very high temperature prior to installation. Only an experienced roofing professional knows how to control the temperature of the resin and make sure that the entire process is completed flawlessly.

The final option we will be discussing about here is rubber roofing. You will often hear experts calling this option as rubber membrane roofing. This is possibly the most costly option known to date when it comes to materials used for flat roofing. In spite of being so expensive, rubber roofs are favorites of hundreds of thousands of people thanks to their extreme sturdiness and high durability. However, if you want your rubber roof to deliver all the benefits it is known to offer, you must seek assistance from a trustworthy roofing service provider in your area to carry out the entire installation job. Another benefit of hiring these professionals is that they will use highest quality rubber for completing the job.

Tips On Installing A Cedar Shake Roof

Tips On Installing A Cedar Shake Roof

Often, the homeowners get puzzled while selecting a particular roofing material. Nowadays, the market is flooded with different varieties of roofing materials wherein each roofing material showcases its benefits as well as drawbacks. The shingles, tiles, rubber, metals, tar etc. are some of these roofing materials that are quite popular with the households.

The roofs that employ cedar shakes are now a thing of the past. The weather-proof coating of cedar shakes in now replaced by the dazzling and vivid colored tin, roll and shingle roofs. The ability of the cedar shakes to prevent your roof against the damaging effects of external agents (air, water, sunlight, dust etc), allows some homeowners to go with such cedar shake roofs.

Nowadays, the market is flooded with the lighter and efficient alternates of the cedar shakes. For instance, the roll, tin and shingled roofs are lighter than the cedar shakes. However, the cedar shakes grow attractive with constant exposure to the external elements.

However, there are a number of households that stick to these cedar shakes when it comes to choosing a roofing material for their homes. Avail the services of an expert roofer straightaway prior to the installation of a cedar shake roof.

Start off the campaign by placing the tar or roofing felt over the surface of the entire roof. Establish a firm and stringent base for the cedar shake layers as cedar shakes are heavier than their counterparts.

Take the cedar shakes to the roof one by one and start their installation job. Initiate the installation task from the left spread of the roof and move towards the right side. Make sure that the overhang on the fascia is maintained in the overall setup. Also, keep sufficient space between the successive shakes. The gaps would allow the regular phenomenon of expansion and contraction of wood.

Render proper finishing to the setup by placing ridge-caps over the cedar shake structure. An alternative for the ridge-caps could be a segment made by joining two cedar shakes.

The complications met in the project need to be handled by the roofer only. Hand over the complications to an expert as soon as possible.

Which Is Better For Roofing- EPDM Or Asphalt ?

Which Is Better For Roofing- EPDM Or Asphalt ?

It is time to discuss the pros and cons of asphalt roofs and EPDM roofs as these are the most common roofs in North America. It is important also to have a basic understanding of the features of each of these types so that they can be compared.

Organic felt or fiberglass dipped in asphalt, and coated with ceramic or stone dust is what is used for asphalt roofing. The coating is done for the purpose of hardening the surface, giving colour and enabling the roof to reflect a small amount of sunlight.

Asphalt roofs are made with asphalt roofing mats or with asphalt shingles. The only difference in these two is that mats are not as heavy as shingles in spite of being made of the same things.

Their greatest advantage is their low cost in addition to ease of installation and low maintenance requirements. However, asphalt roofs are dark in colour and heat the house easily and increase air-conditioning costs. They also contribute to the heat island effect and global warming.

EPDM is used, among many things, for waterproofing roofs. It is especially useful for low-slope roofs and has been for a long time. EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene M-class. It is a synthetic elastomeric rubber and can also be used for roof renovation.

The advantages of EPDM lie in its ability to resist cyclical membrane fatigue, thermal shock, ozone, weathering, abrasion, UV, hail and heat damage. It tends to retain its flexibility in cold temperatures and is also fireproof and resistant to wind uplift.

Installing EPDM roofing is easy. Like asphalt roll roofing mats, it also comes in the form of large mats that have to be stuck to the roof using adhesives and not nails. This is an advantage because nails in roofs are points where roof deterioration can occur by rusting followed by water penetration.

While EPDM roofs are mostly black in color, white versions are also available and using this is an advantage because of the cooling effect it has on homes. This also reduces money and energy spent on artificially cooling the house and is an advantage when compared to asphalt. EPDM as a material is more durable than asphalt.

While EPDM and asphalt are comparable with regard to ease of installation, affordability, recyclability and lifespan, the best choice for a flat roof or a mildly pitched one will be EPDM and for a pitched roof will be asphalt shingles. This is because EPDM shingles are not made. Asphalt rolled roofing is commonly replaced by EPDM roofing but EPDM sheets aren’t to be laid on the asphalt as they will deteriorate because of the oils from asphalt.

Metal Roof Condensation Problems And Resolving Them to Prevent Rusting

Metal Roof Condensation Problems And Resolving Them to Prevent Rusting

It is easy and economical to install metal roofs over houses, sheds, barns, warehouses and even commercial buildings. With proper care, galvanized or powder coated metal roofs should last a lifetime. However, as we know, moisture combined with oxygen is the worst enemy of iron.

What happens in winter or when it rains is that the exterior temperature is lower than interior temperature. This, combined with higher humidity levels in the air inside can lead to condensation on the inner surfaces of metal tin roofs. Apart from the minor inconvenience of drips caused by metal roof condensation, the major, long term impact is that metal corrodes. If neglected, that part of the roof may need to be replaced because no amount of patching will prevent rainwater leaks in the future. If metal is laid over plywood, felt or glass wool, the condensed water can cause further damage.

One solution to preventing such condensation-related problems is to replace the entire roof with plywood or fiberglass sheets. Many have also tried attaching plastic sheeting to the tin roof as a vapour barrier, but it is a cumbersome and ineffective process. One common method of insulating the roof is to use glass wool in a bag attached to the underside of the metal roof. Humid air penetrating through gaps and cracks can still reach metal and condense causing water to collect and wet the insulation. This water does not dry out quickly and combining with oxygen in the air corrodes iron sheets quickly. In such cases where roofs have under-decks, the problem is not apparent until a large portion has corroded and water starts to drip in when it rains.

This can be resolved by coating the underside of metal tin roofs. Painting can prevent corrosion but it cannot prevent condensation. Water will still drip. A better way to protect tin sheets, and at the same time prevent condensation is to cover the underside of the roof with foam. This acts as a vapour barrier and also as an insulating material, preventing warm air inside from touching the cold metal surface and thus preventing condensation.

You can get sheets of flexible foam with an open cell or closed cell structure and glue them to the underside of the tin roof. However, in a majority of cases, such roofs usually have some form of under-decking that makes this a difficult process. The answer, therefore, is spray foam insulation. Spraying with the help of high pressure jetting equipment forces the foam in between the gaps and covers the metal with a porous, yet insulating, vapour-resistant insulating bond. The insulating layer prevents warm humid air inside from touching the cold metal surface. Moisture no longer condenses. You are no longer bothered by the problem of water drips or ponding. Your roof and the underdeck remain dry, safe and retain their physical integrity for years.

Another benefit of this type of in-situ spray foam insulation is that it eliminates the need for frequent painting of the metal surface. At the same time, since the liquid foam adheres to the metal and expands into foam to form a strong bond with metal, it also serves as an effective barrier for vapour, sound, and heat. The foam will not only prevent heat losses from inside during winter, but it will also serve as insulation against exterior heat during summer. Just spray it once and then enjoy a lifetime of peace. Condensation will not take place, and metal is fully covered with an impregnable layer of polyurethane and the roof lasts for decades.

Spray foam insulation is a precise technique that only experts with the right experience, the equipment, and the know-how can carry out to ensure perfect bonding. Their expertise also helps them calculate the precise amount of resin that will be use for a given thickness of foam insulation. Experts can also give “R” figures if asked to show the insulation value. Generally speaking, polyurethane foam has better insulation characteristics compared to glass wool or mineral wool, which means a 5 mm layer has the same insulation factor as a 10 mm rockwool layer. You only need to make sure the work is assigned to experts.

What Are The Different Types Of Commercial Roofing Materials?

What Are The Different Types Of Commercial Roofing Materials?

Generally, the commercial buildings are larger than the residential ones. Therefore, the materials used for the two types of constructions are often different. If you are considering commercial roofing, you should remember that the commercial buildings have different ventilation needs than the residential ones. Specific materials are capable of protecting large buildings from natural elements like rain and snow, while providing excellent ventilation. Given below are some of the common materials that professional roofers use for commercial roofing:

* Polymer membranes

Use of such membranes for roofing is one of the best solutions to waterproof a commercial building. Such materials are manufactured with a single ply membrane made from synthetic polymer. Such polymer membranes are easy to cut. These are also easily fitted according to the shape and contours of the roofs. There are certain polymer membranes that provide a good insulation from heat and cold, thus, helps in reducing the cost of heating and cooling of the building.

* Asphalt

If the roofers use asphalt for roofing, they first use polyester or fiberglass felt at the base of the roof. Coats of asphalt, glazing, and gravel are applied on top of that to make the roof strong and weatherproof. This type of commercial roof is also called built-up roof. This type of roof is resistant to fire and water.

* Shingles

These are other good options for commercial roofs. Shingles are used over the wood fibers or fiberglass, just like the asphalt roofing. Shingles are attached one after the other, thus, forming an overlapping pattern. This type of commercial roofing is common in areas which get substantial rain or snowfall. The sloping pattern of this type of roofing protects the building in a better way from natural calamities too.

* Slate

Slates, when used on roofs make the building look elegant. This is an extremely long-lasting commercial roofing material. Slate roofs have a classic appearance. This material comes in a wide variety of thickness, colors, sizes, and thickness. Such roofs are resistant to algal growth and fungus formation. Thus, they require a less maintenance.

* Metal

Metal is generally used for high end commercial roofing projects. Metal roofing comes in a wide variety of colors. Besides having a modern appearance, metal roofs are also recyclable and environment-friendly.
